EXERCISING AT HOME - TIPS TO SUPPORT YOUR HOME WORKOUTS AND A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

This blog has been a long time coming for me, because I am now an avid home workout individual.

This has happened (long story short) because I moved regions and had my 5 year old son in my full time care for about 7 months and getting to the gym out of my partners work hours was just not an option.

One day I was feeling frustrated that I wanted to work out and couldn't get out, so I just started, right there on the deck. I got up and started stretching, then jumping jacks, the next thing I was on the grass running circles on my lawn.

I learnt all of a sudden, you don't need anything to exercise, just the will to do it.

Moving forward 5 months, I do have some equipment, a yoga mat and some weights and a 'Better Me' app, I will chip away at my home gym life over time.

I wanted to focus on exercising at home because even if you have a gym membership or high energy hobbies, chances are you have gear and its best that the home supports your energetic endeavours to help give you your best life.

Here are some tips to exercising at home and how your home can support a healthier lifestyle.

SPARE ROOMS

As lovely as it is to walk into a spare room and have an inviting bed, beautifully styled and ready for your next guest. Your spare room is a potential home gym also and investing in a great looking fold out couch will give you the every day space to work out and keep your home gym gear, but also offer the hospitable option of a bed when needed.

Spare room cabinetry or closets are a great space to store away mats and weights etc when your guest is there or tidily placed and ready for you, when not.

WORKING OUT-DOORS

What I love about exercising outside is the fresh air, the sun and being in my garden. Sometimes if it hasn't been raining I just workout on the grass in bare feet.

One issue here can be not wanting to be seen by neighbours so it can be a great idea to select a designated space and put up some trellis and climbers or plants with height to create a serene space of privacy and freedom.

EASY ACCESS

One barrier to exercise is the hassle of getting what you need. If your gear is difficult to get or in a space you don't love going to etc, your motivation drops before you've even had a chance to get started. Making sure your equipment is presented or stored in a way that make the gear more attractive and easy to access is going to remove that block. As well as keeping the needed gear all together. A wall mounted bike rack is a really cool way to store your bike and decorate your home at the same time.

There are many cool options for bike racks on www.etsy.co.nz like this Burlap Pipe Rack

STORE AWAY

One eye sore of exercise is shoes

I don't like seeing my sneakers on a shoe rack, there is something about them that look messy, I want to display my heels and boots that I love, not my mud spotted, highlighted trainers.

A storage bench is a really great spot to put shoes and mats and then be able to sit down and put the shoes on.

If undercover, an outdoor bench is great, or a built in bench seat can look beautiful in the hallway and keep your, potentially smelly' shoes close to the door and ready to go.

BATHROOM RETREAT

One of my favourite parts about going to the gym used to be hitting the showers afterward (the particular gym I went to had beautiful retreat like showers). So I like to ensure my bathroom is ready for me after a work out, mainly by keeping it clean, keeping a fresh towel ready to go and styling it with an indoor plant for a fresh and lively feel.

Some plants that thrive in the bathroom are Pothos (pictured), Creeping Fig and Maidenhair Fern.

For a moment I considered the idea of sharing a short clip of my step workout that I do on my deck step but decided there is probably some sort of law against sharing this as a non trained professional or some other convenient excuse to not do this! You may have to jump on and follow my Instagram account and let me know if this is something you want to see and I'll share it in my stories! https://www.instagram.com/lauren_shiels_interior/

I hope this entry has helped toy with the idea of working out at home as well as your other hobbies and routines. Our homes are there to support the lives we want to live and become a more elevated version of ourselves. As someone very clever once said 'You are your greatest project'.

Have a fabulous day, designing your life.
