THE MASTER BEDROOM - HOW TO USE THIS ROOM TO HELP YOU SURVIVE LOCKDOWN

In my humble opinion, the Master bedroom is the most important room in the house, yet due to its privacy, is one of the most neglected.

Its importance lies in our psyche, with how we start and finish the day.

We wake up to it, first thing - the desirable feelings at this point are of energy, motivation, clarity, like a launch pad of your life, your attitude in the morning can shape or destroy your day before you've even had breakfast.

On the flip-side, we retreat to our bedrooms, they are the last place we see in the day.

The desired emotions here are comfort, luxury, personal, relaxed. Did we win this day? Or do we feel defeated as we lay next to a pile of unfolded clean clothes to be dealt with in the morning?

Even if you have children (actually even more so) you can see how important this space is to those who run the household. We hear so much lately the concept of 'self love' so that"'your cup runneth over'' (nice visual Oprah Winfrey!) We must take care of ourselves first, so that we may be so strong and abundant to help others, including the care of our own.

Obviously we are in lockdown right now, we can't go to Mitre10 and get paint, or a local linen store for new sheets. What can we do to improve our bedroom space?

1. MAKE YOUR BED

As soon as you can, make your bed and do a good job of it.

Im talking folding the top sheet over your duvet cover and layering your pillows in an appealing way.

Using a spare blanket as a throw to cozy it up - I even have an oversized knitted scarf as a runner on my bed right now to provide another cozy texture coming into the cooler nights.

Like you would for a guest, make it to impress and make it with love, so that it may greet you whenever you enter the room.

2. LET IN THE LIGHT

Open your curtains/blinds straight away and open a window, let in that fresh Autumn morning air and breathe it in. This could be a wonderful moment to set your intention for the day.

3. CLEAR FLOORS

When there is washing to be done, hide it away in a hamper, when there is washing to fold and put away, do it or move it somewhere else. Try and keep this room as tidy as you can. Even if the rest of the house is falling apart - you won't be getting visitors anytime soon, so don't worry about it!

4. WHAT IS ON YOUR SIDE TABLE?

If you can, pick some fresh flowers from the garden or grab some from your grocery shop and put some next to your bed. The scent will lift the room, the flowers and fresh water give life and they will make you feel special. Next to it perhaps the book you're reading and a lamp with quality light. That's it, simple, lovely and functional.

5. TIDY YOUR ROBE

If you haven't checked out Marie Kondo either on Netflix or one of her books you are missing out!

If you have kids and time is not a luxury, a crash course is a quick sort of clothing in colour coordination.

Make sure lines are clean by tidying sleeves etc and shoes are orderly. You will admire your wardrobe so much more when it's presented well.

6. DUST & CLEAN

Wiping down your window sills with warm water and an essential oil you love can actually be a pleasant experience, breathing in the scent and knowing you are giving love to yourself by giving it to your personal space.

Clear windows are the best! Feng Shui explains clarity of your windows promotes clarity of the mind. Check my instagram for a recipe for home made window cleaner in the story highlights! https://www.instagram.com/lauren_shiels_interior/

It is so important to look after ourselves right now. I myself am home with my partner and two pre-schoolers so it is a challenge, I find the above tips give me a space of escape and when I retreat to bed at the end of the day, I feel pampered and taken care of.

Take care everyone and think healthy thoughts xx
